‘The Cruellest and Most Terrible War that has ever scourged Mankind’ is the theme of the DHS Annual Conference, held after the AGM at the University of Exeter on Saturday 11th October 2014. The event is open to DHS members, their guests, and members of affiliate societies; the programme and booking details are now online.

Saturday 11 Oct 2014. Lecture Theatre C, Streatham Court, University of Exeter, EX4 4QJ.
An exhibition on First World War research undertaken by local history societies will be available for viewing from 9.30 a.m. The AGM is at 10.00, and the day's thematic events run from 11.15 to 17.00.
The event is open to DHS members (free) and member's guests and members of affiliated societies (for a nominal charge of £2.50). Tea/coffee and lunch can be booked - see booking slip for costs.

11.20-12.15 - Bruce Coleman (President’s Address) The national and political scene leading up to World War I
12.15-13.00 - Lunch and view exhibition ‘Theatre of War’, Slide presentation about the battlefields of Northern France and Belgium, prepared by Mo Sandford of Otter Vale Association
13.00-13.55 - Jeremy Black – World War I as Military History reconsidered.
14.00-14.25 - Local research on men who served in the war, presented by:
15.00–15.55 - Richard Batten – Devon’s Holiday Industry in WW1, 1914-1916
16.00-16.50 - Presentations – impact of First World War on Devon communities:
Free parking is available on Saturdays. The nearest car parks are on the Visitors’ car park by the INTO building (access via University entrance and Queen’s Drive) and car park D (access via Stocker Road entrance).
