The exciting new Wimborne History Festival on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July is fast approaching. With living history encampments, thrilling battle re-enactments, dramatic skirmishes and spectacular weapons and artillery demonstrations, this amazing new event is set to inspire and entertain people of all ages.
On the site of Vespasian’s vexillation fort at Lake Gates, just outside Wimborne Minster, the Festival will engage visitors with authentic military and domestic displays, equipment and costume.
Covering multiple centuries the Festival features Roman legionaries, officers, doctors, midwives, gladiators, and of course slaves, from the Legio Secunda Augusta, one of the country’s leading re-enactment groups.
Fearsome warriors from Ulfhedinn Vikings will do battle, and Lord Hopton’s Regiment of Foote will vividly portray local events from the English Civil War. They will be joined by Wimborne’s own Militia who will set up a 17th century mustering camp and give canon and musketry displays. Visitors will be able to travel even further back in time with living history encampments from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
It will be action packed with medieval sword fighting demos, warrior training, Kiddie Vike (one for younger visitors), plus storytelling, music, arts and crafts workshops and trade stalls.
We would also like to mention our fascinating opening night play The Sixth Wife, which brings to life the glitz glamour, intrigue and danger of Henry VIII’s court through the eyes of his last wife Katherine Parr. Tickets for this award-winning production are available via our website.
