17/18th August sees the biennal opening weekend of the Stover Canal Society, which is celebrating with a opening ceremony celebrating the completion of the Phase 1 towpath work from Jetty Marsh to Teign Lock.
>
Stover Canal, opened in 1792, was built to transport ball clay the 1.7 miles from Ventiford to the River Teign at Newton Abbot. Derelict since the 1940s, in 1999 it was formally handed over to Teignbridge District Council by its then owners, Railtrack, following which it has been under renovation by Stover Canal Society and its owners since 2010, the Stover Canal Trust.
The Phase 1 work opens to walkers a mile-long section of the towpath that has been closed to the public over 50 years. At the opening ceremony at 11am on Saturday 17th August, the ribbon will be cut by Justin Templer, a descendant of the canal's builder James Templer.
The event - behind the "dog walkers" car park south of Teign Bridge, Old Exeter Road, Newton Abbot (see map below) - will include static displays and refreshments, , and a BBQ at the display site on Saturday evening.
