2014 marks 100 years since the beginning of World War 1. Trade unions have linked up with community and local history groups across Exeter to organise an event to explore working lives during the war. Activities include: workplace and family history tasters, talks, workshops and exhibits.

History in the Black Box

As part of the free event looking at working lives during World War 1, there are a number of talks and workshops, being held in Exeter Phoenix’s Black Box, from historians and other experts.
Session times
10.30 – Gordon Hutchinson (Met Office) talks about the history of the Met Office in the First World War
11.30 – Julia Neville (Exeter Local History Society) Working in Exeter’s War Hospitals
12.30 – Mick Catmull (BBC journalist) introduces his recent documentary about unrest in Devon during WW1 – “Whose side are you on?”
1.30 – Les Kennedy (Tolpuddle Radical History School) looks at the background to the Stoke Cannon Strike of 1915
2.30 – Nick Nicholls (CWU Tutor) explores the role of the Post Office Battalion
There will be time for a Q&A after each talk. The Black Box is the Phoenix's small cinema style room adjacent to the main auditorium, with seating for around 20-30.
